DESCRIPTION:Chicago's Largest Community-Based Earth Day Event Features Alderman-Elect Ameya Pawar on "Saving Green Together"\n\n \n\nCHICAGO\, March 15\, 2011  47th ward Alderman-Elect Ameya Pawar is speaking on "Saving Green" at the fourth annual North Lake Shore Earth Day celebration on Saturday April\, 16\, Chicago's largest multi-community Earth Day event. \n\n \n\nNorth Side organizations and activists from Andersonville\, Edgewater\, Lincoln Square\, Ravenswood\, Rogers Park\, and Uptown\, with support from Loyola University Chicago\, will show Chicagoans about "Saving Green Together\," so we can save money while saving the planet.\n\n \n\nA free\, all-day\, family event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.\, North Lake Shore Earth Day is an initiative a part of Loyola University Chicago's Weekend of Excellence\, which celebrates the scholarly and civic work of Loyola students\, and the Loyola community. \n\n  \n\nWorkshops\, art projects\, interactive programs\, environmental information stations\, and films about resource conservation will give participants the knowledge and techniques to create sustainable communities by saving green space\, learning to grow your own food\, and starting a community garden. Participants will also get the opportunity to learn the green side of electronics and computing for today's workday world\, create new methods to make a neighborhood pedestrian-friendly\, and explore green government\, Chicago-style. The 50-table strong green event will instruct and inform the most knowledgeable attendees and feature samples and giveaways.\n\n \n\n Children have a full day of activities to look forward to as they learn about seed planting\, nature's creatures\, eating organic\, yoga\, making collages and composting\, at the State Representative Harry Osterman's Kid's Corner. Passionate voices will take center-stage as young people from Chicago Public Schools\, City Colleges of Chicago\, and other institutions discuss how their projects and initiatives are bringing the generation's leaders to the forefront in the environmental movement. \n\n \n\nElected officials participating in this event include: Chicago Aldermen Patrick O'Connor (40th)\, Helen Shiller (46th)\, Ald.-Elect Ameya Pawar (47th)\, Mary Ann Smith (48th) and Joe Moore (49th)\, Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin\, Congressman Mike Quigley\, Illinois State Senator Heather Steans\, and State Representatives Greg Harris and Harry Osterman.\n\n \n\nIn addition to the Saturday main event\, a special artistic\, musical evening will be held the night of Friday\, April 15\, from 8 p.m. to 2a.m. in Mundelein Center\, home of Loyola's Department of Fine and Performing Arts. The local artists and art enthusiasts will commune and create environmental art pieces for the Earth Day event on Saturday. \n\n \n\nFood sampling from local diverse and healthy restaurants will also be provided throughout the day. Lunch will be sold on site by local vendors. The event is easily accessible by public transportation via the CTA Red Line and the #147 bus. Walking and biking are encouraged. All cyclists are invited to join in our community bike ride and free bike rentals sponsored by the Loyola's Borrow A Bike Program.
