Chicago Cultural Alliance invites you to explore how the German, Polish and Puerto Rican communities shaped this neighborhood since its founding in 1869, and hear the stories of how three ethnic groups worked to make Humboldt Park home while continuing to honor ties to their respective homelands.
This tour has been developed as a joint endeavor between Chicago Cultural Alliance Core Members: DANK Haus German American Cultural Center, Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, and the Polish Museum of America, with their partner Chicago Architecture Foundation and generous support from Boeing Company.
Attendees will learn about the contributions of these ethnic groups that helped create the city of Chicago as we know it today, and experience treasured community landmarks along the way. By the end of this tour, attendees will see the urban landscape and culture in a whole new way. Throughout this tour, we will touch on recurring themes for each community of immigration and migration, we will come to understand use of the park by different groups over time, and we will discuss how various ethnic communities have worked to make Humboldt Park their home while continuing to honor their heritage and maintain ties to their homeland.
Attendees will enjoy a treat from Café Colao, be prepared for extensive walking, and have the opportunity to explore Division Street restaurants or the Park on their own after the tour.
This event is designed for those from 16 to 116 years old.
