• St. Matthias School honors 9/11 victims with flag ceremony

St. Matthias School, the only wall-to-wall, Catholic International Baccalaureate (IB) elementary school in the state of Illinois, honored the 2000+ victims of 9/11 through a special flag ceremony on Friday, September 9. Our community, including our students, staff and faculty, 40th Ward Alderman Andre Vazquez and 47th Ward Alderman Matt Martin, members of the local fire and police departments, united to pay respect to the heroes and victims of 9/11. Members of the Cielito Lindo group, which includes students at St. Matthias School, sang the National Anthem. Prayers from a variety of faiths were shared by eighth graders–reinforcing the idea of our togetherness and acceptance in honoring the victim’s lives. The scroll containing the 2,977 names was unrolled at the ceremony while students took a moment of silence. Marty McAndrew of the Shannon Rovers played Amazing Grace while students placed flags in front of our school. This flag ceremony marks the 21st anniversary of the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Pacholski, Principal stated, "It is our responsibility to pay tribute to the lives that were lost and the heroism that triumphed on this day more than twenty years ago. As a community, we are united by our strength and faith in God.”
