German Cinema Now - Sun Alley (Sonnenallee)
East-German born director Leander Haussmann created a colorful, hilarious and nostalgic look at life in East Berlin in the 1970's with "Sun Alley" It takes a comic look at an era usually portrayed through bleak dramas or espionage thrillers.
17 year-old Micha lives on Sun Alley, which wends most of its way through West Berlin with only its tail end in East Berlin. But Wall or no Wall, it's the 70's: bell bottoms, the Stones and getting into trouble. When Micha's passions are aroused by the stunning Miriam, his spirit soars to blissful heights of freedom and the rest of the world fades.
We travel on this journey with him and we realize that "East" is not all that it is cracked up to be. For Micha and his gang, it is the best time of their lives.
