TIME OUT CHICAGO KIDS PARTNERS WITH SULZER REGIONAL LIBRARY FOR BOOK CLUB EVENT
Parents and young adults read two books on Katrina, followed by a discussion and service project.
Chicago, IL, July 19, 2011 –Time Out Chicago Kids is proud to announce its first-ever summer book club event in partnership with the Sulzer Regional Library (4455 N Lincoln Ave) to be held Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to noon. Time Out Chicago Kids’ book club is intended to bring parents and children reading together with two books selected on a similar theme.Adults will read Dave Eggers’s Hurricane Katrina-themed novel Zeitoun, while young adults (appropriate for middle schoolers ages 9-12) will read Jewell Parker Rhodes’s Ninth Ward. The reading experience culminates in a discussion at the Sulzer Library, immediately followed by a community service project at the Ravenswood Community Services/All Saints' Episcopal Church (1757 W Wilson Ave).
“We wanted to create an alternative summer activity for families that both encouraged children to read and fostered conversation with adults,” said Time Out Chicago Kids Editor-in-Chief Amy Carr. “We also wanted to introduce kids to volunteerism at an early age and allow them to give back to their community.”
The service project continues the spirit of giving that followed Katrina. Families are invited to packhygiene kits that will be passed out to those in need in the Chicagoland area. Participants are encouraged to bring toiletry items to donate.
There is no cost for the event, though reservations are highly encouraged. To R.S.V.P., and to see author interviews, discussion questions, or to participate in Time Out Chicago Kids’ online reading forum, visit timeoutchicagokids.com/bookclub.
